Before laying up the fiberglass, I laid a piece of handi-wrap over the door panel to keep the layup from sticking. This mechod is much faster and safer than trying to lay up directly onto the plastic..
I then laid up a 1/8" thick fiberglass cover. I wasn't particularly interested in the original texture or the exact shape, so this method worked well.
